In Science we have done three of pracs about Heat Transfer. In these projects we did:

1. Balloon Popping

We got into groups of three (my group was me, Katie and Rachael E) and each group got an air-filled balloon and a balloon half-filled with water. It was a little bit hard filling it up with water because it sprayed everywhere. We also got a candle. We had to hold the balloons one at a time over the lit candle and recorded what happened. This is what happened:

  • The air-filled balloon popped as soon as it got within half a centimetre of the flame.
  • The half-water half-air balloon did not pop but blackened.

It was an interesting experiment and I really enjoyed it.

2. Black or Silver?

Mr Finnerty told us how silver usually got hotter quicker than black (eg cars) and why. The silver reflects the light more.

Anyway, we got a black can, a silver can and two thermometers. We got into table groups (my group was Beattie, Jayden, Will and me) and filled the cans with hot water. Next we put the thermometers in and recorded the temperatures every five minutes. The temperatures got steadily cooler but there was a definite gap between the two. In the end the silver black can got cooler quicker. I liked that experiment too.

 3.Colours and Jars.

Aim: To see convection in a glass jar by using colour crystals to show it.

Apparatus: Beaker, tripod, colour crystal, Bunsen burner, wire mesh, water.

Procedure: First we got into table groups (mine was Belinda, Will and I), filled the beaker with water and placed it on the mesh on the tripod. Then we put the colour crystal in the beaker on the very edge. We put the Bunsen burner beneath the tripod and turned it on. When the water began to get hot,the dye in the crystal rose up to a cooler place, then to the other side, back down and then to where it first started. It kept going in that circle. Evantually all the water turned pink and we turned the burner off. This was my  favourite experiment and it explained a lot about convection.
